6.2.1 Appearance

The appearance of the presenter is the first thing the audience is likely to see and this will give the audience its first impression. A tasteful professional outfit will not only give the audience a good first impression, but it will also give the presenter a burst of self-confidence: most people feels good when they look good. For most technical presentations, business casual is appropriate:

An unprofessional appearance, unless the presenter is well known to the audience, will usually result in a hostile audience which will be resistant to even listening to the presenter.

Do not wear clothing or accessories which may attract the attention of, or distract, the audience. Clashing colours or gaudy jewelry will become the focus of audience members, especially if the presentation is boring.

As noted under fear, a presenter is prone to increased perspiration. Be sure to use antiperspirant and not deodorant the morning before a presentation.
