6 Presentation Skills

The presenter is the primary focus of any technical presentation. Good organization and good visual aids are both prerequisites for a good presentation; however, a poor presentation will negate many of these previous efforts. A good presentation may also alleviate some shortcomings in organization and visual aids.

Presentation skills encompass all issues related to the presenter delivering his or her message in front of the audience, and these can be summarized as:

We will look at each of these in detail, however, it should be noted that the best way to learn how to speak is to watch other speakers. Watching presentations will highlight both positive techniques and highlight mistakes. New speakers should not become immediately discouraged if they do not hone their oratory skills with their first few presentations. Other means of improving presentation skills is to join a local chapter of Toastmasters International, an organization which "helps its members improve their communication and leadership skills while fostering self-confidence and personal growth".
